Remembering our holy companions...

No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent,
for to His Angels God has given command about you, that they guard
you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up,
lest you dash your foot against a stone." - Psalm 91: 10-12

"It was during the Mass at 6:30 in the morning, at the moment of Consecration.  A dazzling light suddenly shone forth...I had the feeling that this adorable splendor was that of the Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.  Struck to the heart I could only repeat, 'My Lord and My God!'

At the same moment there appeared the outline of the angels in prayer before the shining Host.  They were kneeling all around the altar in a semi-circle, their backs toward us.  There were eight of them… They did not have wings, but their bodies were enveloped in sort of a mysterious luminescence which clearly distinguished them  from humans.
Amazed, not believing my eyes, I opened and closed them, rubbed them, but nothing changed.  All eight were there to adore the Most Blessed Sacrament in an attitude of great devotion. ...
At the moment of Communion, my guardian angel approached me to invite me to advance to the altar.  At that moment, I clearly distinguished the guardian angels of each member of the community close to their left shoulders, and of the height a little smaller than each.  Like my guardian angel they gave truly the impression of guiding and watching over them with sweetness and  affection.  This scene in itself opened my eyes to the profound meaning of the guardian angel, better than any theological explanation, even the most detailed.  After dinner I gave a complete account of this vision to the Bishop…  Had they not chosen the Feast of the Guardian Angels to show the example of adoration and to reveal their readiness to lead us to the Lord? ~ Sr Agnes Sasagawa

"God's universal providence works through secondary causes . . . The world of pure spirits stretches between the Divine Nature and the world of human beings; because Divine Wisdom has ordained that the higher should look after the lower, Angels execute the Divine plan for human salvation: they are our Guardians, who free us when hindered and help to bring us home."  ~St. Thomas Aquinas

To light, guard, rule, guide...

To My Guardian Angel, Before the Blessed Sacrament
By Paul Thigpen

 angel3.jpg (350×414)

My Guardian,
Hold my hand lest, over-timid,
I should flee so great a Sovereignty.
Prick my heart lest, too familiar,
I insult so great a Clemency.
Fix my eyes lest, too distracted,
I grow blind to such a Majesty.
Move my tongue lest, too lethargic,
     I neglect such opportunity.

Priorities par excellence

"When you speak or preach, always insist on frequent Communion
and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary."- St John Bosco

"I beg you to recommend to everyone,
first, adoration of Jesus
in the Blessed Sacrament
and then reverence for most holy Mary."

  St John Bosco
 Italy ~ Aug 16, 1815 - Jan 31, 1888
Priest, Educator, Founder of Salesian Society
"Father and Teacher of Youth"
FEAST DAY - January 31

“When tempted, invoke your Angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: he trembles and flees at the sight of your Guardian Angel.”  - St. John Bosco

St John Bosco, pray for us!

Venerable Mama Margaret is the beloved and holy mother of St John Bosco. The sanctity and holiness of St John Bosco was first nurtured by a mother's prayer, a mother's example.  From Mama Margaret to her son:

"When you came into the world I consecrated you to the Blessed Virgin Mary. When you began your studies, I inculcated this devotion in you. Now I want you to belong totally to her. Make your companions those who are devoted to Mary; and if you reach ordination, never cease to inculcate and spread this devotion."

"I have nothing to say regarding your vocation, except that you should do what God inspires you to do. Do not be concerned on my behalf. You owe me nothing. Never forget that I was born in poor circumstances, have lived in poverty all my life; and I am happy to die poor; and I say this seriously to you: if you ever become  wealthy, I shall never set foot on your doorstep."

"Dear John, you have taken the priestly habit and I am as happy as any mother could be. But never forget that it is not the habit that matters, but the effort to progress in virtue. If you ever come to have doubts about your vocation, be sure you never dishonor that priestly garb. Put it aside immediately. I would rather a poor peasant son than a priest who neglected his sacred calling".

"John, you are now a priest; you will be saying Mass; so from henceforth you will be closer to Jesus. Remember that to begin to celebrate Mass means also to begin to suffer. You will not realize this immediately, but little by little you will see that what your mother has told you is the truth."

Send your angel to Mass

When the Eucharist is being celebrated, the sanctuary
is filled with countless angels who adore
the divine victim immolated on the altar. - St. John Chrysostom

Send Your Angel to Holy Mass
O, holy angel at my side, go to the church for me.
Kneel in my place at holy Mass, where I desire to be.
At Offertory in my stead, take all I am and own,
and place it as a sacrifice upon the altar throne.
At holy consecration’s bell, adore with seraph’s love,
my Jesus, hidden in the Host, come down from heaven above.
And when the priest Communion takes, O, bring my Lord to me,
that his sweet heart may rest on mine, and I his temple be.
Then pray for those I dearly love, and those who cause me grief,
Jesus’ love may cleanse all hearts and suffering souls relieve.
Pray that this sacrifice divine, may mankind’s sin’s efface,
then bring me Jesus’ blessing home, the pledge of every grace. Amen.

A pledge of that Day to come!

Lo, the day is coming. - Malachi 3:19a (today’s First Reading)

Artist - Valerian Ruppert

"As we do in today’s Psalm, we should sing His praises, joyfully proclaim His coming as Lord and King. The Day of the Lord is always a day that has already come and a day still yet to come. It is the “today” of our Liturgy.
The Apostles prayed marana tha - “O Lord come!” (see 1 Corinthians 16:22; Revelation 22:20).
In the Eucharist He answers, coming again as the Lord of hosts and the Sun of Justice with its healing rays (Malachi 3:20a). It is a mighty sign - and a pledge of that Day to come."
